Chapter Twelve

It was bad enough that Marianna had Javier in her crib but the fact that she had him thinking that he was the father of the baby made Rocko want to kick her in the chest. He sat on the edge of her bed, watching his son sleep in his bouncer. The boy had smoky gray eyes, just like Rocko’s, a mocha brown complexion, just like Rocko’s. He had deep dimples and a brush of thick curly hair. He looked just like Rocko. There was no way the kid could be Javier’s.

Rocko looked over his shoulder at Marianna as she snored lightly. He rolled his eyes and pulled out his phone. He texted Juice, asking if he had any sticks. While he waited for a reply, he heard a knock at the door. He glanced at Marianna and then, decided to go see who it was. He looked through the peep hole and saw Javier. “Man.” He snapped his teeth and waved his hand. He was not in the mood for the bullshit so he pretended that no one was home and eventually Javier got the hint.

Rocko was Vanessa’s baby boy. He was the only one who didn’t despise her so much. Actually, he loved his mother; he just hated what she did. When he was a kid, she was different. She was a mother; warm, neutering, and gentle. He could remember all the basketball games and trips to Carvel. It seemed like when his father got arrested and all of his siblings moved away, things really changed for the worst. Maybe he didn’t remember living with different folks or going days without eating. He was old enough to remember the change she tried to set forth when she was trying to get them from the state’s custody. He probably just tried to block all the bad memories out, after all Nessa was his mother. Looking back, he realized how fucked up his parents really were and he didn’t want to be that for his son.

Yes, it’s true that Marianna is a little loose. Well, no, she’s a lot loose but he had to play the cards dealt to him. Hell, he knew that trifling heffa was loose when he took his chances in that there bed with her. He wasn’t thinking about the consequences though, he just wanted to get his thing wet. You know, how them little young boys is, they think with their other head. You would think he would know enough to wrap it up but when that thing hot and ready, these young boys just lose all their senses. Lawd, have mercy and you can’t tell ‘em nothing. Not a damn thing ‘cause when they start to thinking they in love it’s like a cloud wrap ‘round their brain and suck all the oxygen out. Maybe it’s the allure of the feminine nature or it’s that Rocko thought he could change Marianna. You can’t turn no hoe into a house wife though.

Marianna was sitting up in the bed, nursing the baby when he went back into the room.
